K-Series Clutch Kit 6-speed vs 5-Speed Tranmissions

If you have a 02-06 RSX Base, 02-05 Civic Si, or 2004-2008 Acura TSX, and looking for a replacement clutch kit or performance clutch. You will see that a lot of clutch kit either are sold with a flywheel or require a RSX Type-S flywheel to work. It is because most aftermarket clutches are made to use with RSX Type-S Flywheel, the K-series 6-speed models such as RSX Type-S and 06-11 Civic Si, have different flywheel than the 5-Speed models such as the RSX Base and Civic Si EP3, the bolt pattern on the flywheel for the pressure plate are different.

So if you are in the market for a lighten flywheel and performance clutches, you have a lot of choices. There are quite a few Clutch and Flywheel combo out there that you can choose from. However, if you have a 5 speed model RSX Base or EP Civic Si and you only want to purchase a clutch, and keep using your stock K20a3 flywheel. Your options are either an OEM Honda Clutch, some lesser known aftermarket OE Replacement Brand or the Exedy OE Replacement Clutch Kit. Other things to change while the transmission is down.

With the clutch slave cylinder off, Clutch/ flywheel removed. You may want to consider changing the follow items to prevent issues that may occur in the future.

Replace your remain seal.

It is always a good idea to replace your rear main seal while your transmission is off, so you don't have to remove your transmission again when it start to leak. A worn rear main seal can squirt oil out and affect the performance of your clutch.

Replace you pressure plate bolts and flywheel bolts

The importance of replacing factory bolts during a clutch replacement may often be overlooked by many. While some may argue that reusing them is acceptable, it is worth considering that they can stretch and become less effective over time, especially after multiple removals and re-installations. It is highly recommended to replace them with new, genuine Honda bolts. If your engine is meant for performance, it may be wise to opt for stronger bolts like the ARP Honda K Series Pressure Plate and Flywheel Bolts.

Clutch master and slave cylinders

Use a new clutch master and clutch slave cylinder This one is optional to some, but if you are installing a performance clutch and your clutch master/slave cylinders have some age on them, you may want to replace so that your clutch will get proper pressure from the new units.

For those who like to quick shift

If you desire to quickly shift at high RPM, your factory or OE replacement clutch master cylinder may contain a delay valve that postpones the transfer of fluid to your slave cylinder. As a result, you may experience grinding and rasping of gears and synchros, due to the clutch disk not being fully disengaged. A solution to this issue is to replace the your factory K-series clutch master cylinder with the one found in the 99-00 Civic Si EM1. This alteration will enhance your high RPM shifting experience. In order to install the 99-00 Civic Si EM1 Clutch Master Cylinder in your K-Chassis, you will need custom lines and fittings for it to adapt your factory hose.
